To enclose, to carry, to store, to preserve--these are the functions of
a vessel, be it a flask or a steamship. It is the bi-directionality of
this image, both small and domestic or large and public, depending on
the vessel, that makes the Sacred Heart a "vessel of justice and
charity" in the Litany. Jesus' sacred heart encompasses and conveys
these qualities, as in the Gospels where he transforms situations of
injustice and hard-heartedness around him. But even today, our month
of meditations upon his heart makes us aware that in his person, he has
preserved and can still bring to us and our lives the capacity to do
right by others, which for me is the link between justice and charity.
The Sacred Heart is a vessel.
