TAKE BACK THE NIGHT
Thursday April 29th, 2010 from 7-10pm.
This annual march and rally held in the spring and organized by the WRAC affiliated Iowa Women Initiating Social Change (IWIS). Historically, this event recognized sexual and relational violence against women, as women are most often the targets of this type of violence. However for this year, the event will be extended to provide the opportunity for all oppressed groups to speak out against violence in many manifestations (i.e sexualized, relational, physical, emotional, spiritual, religious, etc) and literally to take back the night. We assert that all human beings have the right to be free from violence, the right to be heard, and the right to reclaim those rights if they are violated. We will start the night at 7pm on the UI Pentacrest with an open stage. Any person or group who wishes to share their perspective on how violence has impacted their communities is invited to the stage. Performances, songs, stories, and poems are all welcome. At 8pm we will march through Iowa City and reclaim the streets from all perpetrators of violence and to let the city and campus know that violence against any group will not be tolerated. The march will end at the UI Pentacrest and at this time (8:30pm) we will pass a microphone through the crowd and invite individuals to share their personal experiences and stories with violence. For more information, please contact the WRAC at (319) 335-1486

GAY AND LESBIAN VICTORY FUND TRAINING

Cost: $350 (includes hotel room, training fees, materials, and meals)
Deadline to Register: May 13, 2010
Gay & Lesbian Leadership Institute's renowned four-day, intensive Candidate & Campaign Training is offered several times a year in cities across the country. Training attendees learn from leading political strategists during the day and work with their peers on a complex campaign simulation at night. The simulation models a real campaign complete with district background, media and budget information and voter files. Similar to an actual campaign, trainees work long hours in teams and compete using the skills necessary to build a strategy to win. To enhance the peer learning process, an extensive outreach effort is conducted to find trainees who have demonstrated leadership in their communities and have great potential for public service. GLLI training was an important first step for many open LGBT elected officials prior to running successful campaigns. To learn more about the training, please visit our website at http://www.glli.org/training
and you can apply today at http://www.glli.org/apply.
