Maybe you aren't dealing with different senses of the verb, but a
leaching of the sense as the adverb becomes the focus of sentence.
Consider that 'he handled the dynamite' is quite different from 'he
treated the dynamite', while 'he handled the dynamite carefully' is
nearly the same as 'he treated the dynamite carefully'.
