I organized a Tax Day Protest in Gainesville, Florida, and, as
discussed at last Saturday's local Peace Forum Meeting, am giving a short report
back on what happened.
First, let me say, I emailed and phoned a lot of people and asked
them to join us at the main post office from 4-6:30 pm. Seven people
showed up in front of the post office and at the exit were two more folks with
great signs (THANKS PIERCE!) and on the street were a few more folks (HUGS
TO SCOTT CAMIL). We had great Tax Day related signage: Don't
Buy Bush's War; Taxes for Education, Not Occupation; Don't Fund War; and more;
we also had big photos of injured Iraqi children with a banner across the top:
YOUR TAX DOLLARS AT WORK. We handed out over 200 copies of the Tax Day
receipt downloaded from CodePINK -- what a great great handout. We stood
right in front of the entrance to the Post Office. Three ""Fair" Tax"
(???) people were also in front of the entrance handing out literature and
holding signs. The Post Master came out about 4:45 and said he didn't mind
us being there but customers needed "unfettered access" to the Post
Office. There was a constant stream of people. We didn't "fetter"
anyone...I promise!!..... we had mostly good response but a few negatives.
One woman asked us if we voted for Bush, we all emphatically said "NO" in unison
and she smiled and said, "Well, that's good!" Many people weren't wearing
their glasses so I don't think they knew what was written on the receipt we were
handing them. I loved the receipt -- a really great handout. Many
smiled with thumbs up and thanked up for being there. We did have a few
negative comments: Someone called us "chicken little" to which I replied,
"Peace takes courage, too!" A few people accused us of not supporting the
troops; most were just in a hurry to get about their chores, some chatted in
support for a few moments. Only one really obnoxious guy started yelling
at us but our own Dave Bruderly (yea Dave) followed him into the post
office and had a rowdy conversation with and that was that!!
I want to give a big hug to everyone who SHOWED UP for this little
one time protest. If you missed out and would like to join us, remember,
we will be at 13th St. and University Av. next Tuesday, April 24, from 4-6:30
and we sure could use some help. Also, folks will be traveling to
Miami April 28 for an IMPEACH BUSH rally at Miami-Dade CC Kendall Campus.
If you would like to go to Miami to protest Bush, please call me
I still believe that the #1 thing you can do for peace is SHOW UP at
local peace events. If not you, who? If not now, when? We need YOU
to make a difference! YOUR presence on the peace line could tip the scales
in favor of ending Bush's dirty lying war. Again, thanks to all who took
the two hours to "grab a sign, get in line and let 'em know what's on your
Your pink pal for peace,
