All day: Jacque Betz ( jacquebetz@... ) and Code Pink are organizing a letter-writing campaign in various locations.
Over 3,000 U.S. troops have now been killed in Iraq. Tens of thousands have been seriously injured. More than 600,000 Iraqis have died as a result of this intervention. Iraq'a ancient cities have been destroyed and their country devastated. Over 2 million Iraqis have fled their country to escape the genocidal conditions brought on by the war and occupation. The U.S. government has spent more than $300 billion to prosecute this illegal and immoral campaign. Only Congress can put an end to this war, but Congress has shown that it will not act with conviction and determination unless confronted by an active and vocal citizenry.
Greens support the closing of U.S. military bases in Iraq, a cutoff of funding for the war, and the immediate withdrawal of U.S. troops.
Lasting peace will only result from a political and diplomatic solution to the sectarian violence, and that cannot occur under U.S. military occupation. The occupation of Iraq cannot serve to prevent violence because the occupation is in fact a primary catalyst for more violence. Even Iraqis who despised Saddam Hussein are joining the resistance, and their fight against the occupiers will continue until the occupiers leave. A democratic society will never be built on the foundation of a military occupation.
The prosecutors of this illegal war have hijacked our nation and robbed every citizen of this country of funds that are needed for health care, education, transportation infrastructure, and development of renewable energy technologies. Instead, our tax dollars are being funneled to arms merchants and war profiteers. The rich receive massive tax breaks while budget deficits mount and an astronomical debt is accumulated for future generations to pay.
The Green Party supports an immediate end to the war and occupation in Iraq, and an investigation and impeachment of George W. Bush and Dick Cheney for high crimes and misdemeanors.
U.S. OUT OF IRAQ!
BRING THE TROOPS HOME!
INVESTIGATION AND IMPEACHMENT NOW!
