Religious leaders from three local congregations are planning an Interfaith Vigil of Remembrance on the third anniversary of the beginning of the current Iraq war.
The event, called "An Interfaith Vigil of Remembrance," will be held Sunday afternoon, March 19, at 3:00 p.m. at the Gainesville Downtown Community Plaza, 111 East University Avenue.
"This will be a time for the Gainesville community to publicly express grief and lament the death and destruction of war," said Eve MacMaster, Pastor of Emmanuel Mennonite Church, one of the organizers.
The event will include music, silent prayer, and a "Ritual of Ashes, Stones, and Flowers" in memory of all victims of war and terrorism.
At 4:00 participants will walk together to Holy Trinity Episcopal Church, 100 NE 1st Street, for fellowship and light refreshments.
Other sponsors in addition to Emmanuel Mennonite Church are Gainesville Friends Meeting (Quakers) and the North Florida Episcopal Peace Fellowship. People from these groups have been meeting informally for more than a year, to create an interfaith peace and justice center.
