Subject: MAJOR ATLANTA PEACE & JUSTICE MARCH ON APRIL 1--Please forward this appeal!
During the past three and a half years, thousands of us have worked together to build the peace movement in Georgia. We have stood on street corners, marched, written letters, and contributed money. Before the war began, we made two powerful statements. On November 9, 2002, 3,000 Georgians (with friends from other states) marched from the King Center to Centennial Park chanting No War On Iraq; media coverage carried our message to tens of thousands. Soon after, over 1,000 people contributed $35,000 to print our War Is Not the Answer full-page ad in the Atlanta Journal Constitution on Feb. 21, 2003 and in six other papers the following month. Since 2003, we have developed stronger community, state-wide, and regional networks. Now, three years into this immoral war, we can use this foundation to mobilize as never before!
JOIN US IN ORGANIZING A MASSIVE SOUTHERN REGIONAL MARCH ON APRIL 1!
At this critical time, the Southern Regional March for Peace in Iraq and Justice at Home has the potential for national impact, bringing Civil Rights, anti-war, faith, labor, and student constituencies together here in Atlanta, the home of Dr. King, on a date linking the anniversary of the war with that of Dr. King’s assassination. Our goal is to mobilize 10,000 people from Georgia and the Southeast to march from the King Center and to Piedmont Park, calling on our government to bring the troops home now and address economic and social crises here, including the Katrina disaster, health care, and government spying. The Georgia Peace and Justice Coalition, WAND, Georgia Coalition for the People’s Agenda, and Concerned Black Clergy joined with six other groups to issue the initial call. Today, the April 1st Coalition numbers over 35 organizations and is growing daily. Hundreds of activists from across Georgia and the Southeast have begun organizing. WE NEED YOUR SUPPORT.
MOBILIZE FOR THE MARCH! Please forward this email to friends, adding a personal note. Print copies of the leaflet (attached as a document) to share with others. Place a notice in your church bulletin or other newsletter. Organize a group you are affiliated with to endorse the event (return the form pasted below, also attached), and march together on April 1
BECOME A MARCH SPONSOR! EVERY dollar contributed will help raise the needed $15,000. Sponsors giving $50 or more will be listed in our literature.
