I read the phrase "Sorry State of the Union" somewhere. That also could be a good theme. I'm all for being on street corner but I'd say do during rush hour for more visibility. Not 7pm, long after dark. Also state of florida has an execution scheduled on Jan 31, 6 pm I assume, so maybe 7pm would work for those who go to the prison vigil. Just some thoughts. Miriam
I don't know of any place having a public showing. I tried to organize a State of the DisUnion Party last year and the year before -- but it was a flop. For something to begin on a Monday night at 9 pm has to be fairly grand to get me out of the house! Weather, too, is iffy on January 31. Peptoabissimal Party.
All that said, I do have a suggestion. Make a reservation for a table that has good TV viewing at Harry's in downtown Gainesville. Tell Harry's a party is coming to watch the State of the Union address and we want the TV tuned to that station. Make sure it is a-ok with Harry's. We should have people RSVP so we could give Harry's a number to accommodate 24 hours in advance. It's downtown, centrally located, warm. Lots of TVs. Drink, don't drink; eat, don't eat; ok prices, I like their food.
Also, we could all meet for a banging of the drums and noisy protest at Main St. and University Avenue in downtown Gainesville from say, 7 to 9 pm. on that same Monday, January 31. I have lots of pink banners we could wave; even wear pink slips with Bush name on them (over our warm clothes)...
So, it's an idea, what do you think?
