WHAT: Protest of

Florida NOW has
called a statewide day of action to oppose Supreme Court Justice Nominee
Samuel Alito. Monday, Gainesville Area NOW will protest the confirmation
hearings of the right-wing nominee from 4:30-6pm at the corner of University
Avenue and 13th Street.
Samuel Alito's anti-abortion, anti-birth control,
and anti-woman politics are an outrage. Alito has openly opposed women's
right to an abortion. In 1985 Alito wrote a memo outlining a legal
and political strategy for chipping away at and eventually overturning Roe
v. Wade. Alito has also favored requiring women to get their husbands'
permission in order to have an abortion, narrowing the gap between church and
state, and making it harder for workers to bring gender and racial
discrimination cases to trial.
The next appointee to the Supreme Court
will be the swing vote for issues vital to the survival and freedom of women:
abortion rights, birth control access, affirmative action, lesbian rights,
family and medical leave, equal pay, protection from violence and
sexual harassment, and equality in education (Title IX).
the stakes are high. We demand that the Senate- and in particular Florida
senators Nelson and Martinez- oppose this nomination as an affront to women's
equality. We call on women to join NOW, and to help us fight to defend and
