Re: [codepinkorlando] For the first time, Tanks have been deployed against lawful demonstrators in the streets of America
I believe that they had tanks at the FTAA demonstration in Miami this year. Also storm-trooper police in full riot gear everywhere. They closed down the whole downtown Miami and presented a total police state including, helicopters, police boats in Biscayne Bay, horses, humvees, teargass guns, etc. They closed off all of the streets except for one or two, so they could control where the crowd was allowed to go. You can forget about your free right to assemble. The also closed down all of the public transportation and chained the entries in the afternoon. I had to accept a ride from two total strangers just to get back to my vehicle on Brickell Avenue because I had parked and taken the public transit in the morning. After 6 p.m. everyone was herded out of the area and a lot of them ended up in a bad part of town which is not a good place to be after dark. All of this really does restrict your right to free speech and assembly. They are slowly undermining the constitution and it sends a chilling message to everyone.

Is this a preview ofthings to come under the second Bush term?
In a message dated 11/10/2004 3:49:35 PM Eastern Standard Time,
For the first time, Tanks have been deployed against lawful demonstrators in the streets of Los Angeles.
I attended the emergency demonstration called by ANSWER for Nov. 9th, at the Westwood Fed. Building in West LA. Attended by around 200 people, the protest was against the bombing of Fallujah, and to a lesser extent...claims of election fraud. I witnessed nothing out of the ordinary, the crowd was calm and non-violent, there were no attempts at civil disobedience, there were no break away marches... everyone obeyed the law.
The corporate newsmedia ignored the whole thing, and there were few police in sight other than those who protect the Fed. Building itself.
The demonstration started at 6:00 pm, and by 7:30 I decided to leave.
Some twenty minutes after my departure, military TANKS arrived and parked directly infront of the demonstrators. The Indymedia website for LA has posted a photo of the tanks, along with a quicktime movie that shows how they were deployed against the protestors. (From Indymedia LA) - TANKS APPEAR AT ANTI-WAR PROTEST IN WESTWOOD LOS ANGELES, November 9, 2004 - At 7:50 PM armored tanks showed up at an anti-war protest in front of the federal building in Westwood.
The tanks circled the block twice, the second time parking themselves in the street and directly in front of the area where most of the protesters were gathered.
Enraged, some of the people attempted to block the tanks, but police quickly cleared the street. The people continued to protest the presence of the tanks, but after about ten minutes the tanks drove off.
It is unclear as to why the tanks were deployed to this location.
