With Shotguns permission I have posted a postcard picture of my
ggrandfather, John Allen McDonald on the Photo site of this message
board. I need help to identify when or where it was taken.
Shotgun has been most helpful in telling me how to look for certain
things to date the picture. But, if anyone else can be more
specific, I would appreciate it.
My ggrandfather enlisted with the 43rd TN Inf in 1862. He would have
been 19 years old. This postcard was made sometime between 1905 and
1915 because of the split address placement on the back. However, the
picture was taken many years earlier. As shotgun pointed out, the
men in this picture look to be between 20-30 years old. That would
put it post civil war, but possibly prior to 1880.
One of my aunts or uncles noted on the back "Daddy, John McDonald's
dad, John Allen McDonald and men in the Civil War." It doesn't appear
that anyone is dressed in uniform, but this must have been told to
whom ever noted that on the back.
This is a picture of a train derailment, but I can't read the name on
the side of the back box car. Shotgun suggested that since my
ggrandfather was from Tennessee and by the look of the terrane that
it was possible in Tennessee, Georgia, or Alabama.
My ggrandfather is the one in the middle of the open box car, right
behind the black man.
If anyone could help, I would certainly appreciate it.
Thanks in advance
