CELTIC LEAGUE - PRESS INFORMATION
PIPELINE CONTROVERSY "IRISH GOVERNMENT DID NOT ACT PROMPTLY" ALLEGATION
Despite the release of the Rossport Five questions are still being
asked about the Irish governments handling of the situation and its
apparent acquiescence to multi-national attempts to stifle genuine
concerns about the pipeline's safety in the north Mayo community.
Latest group to 'pitch in' to the controversy are the Cornish branch
of the Celtic League. In correspondence to the Taoiseach (see below)
the groups Convenor, Rhisiart Tal-e-bot, says the "have reservations
that the Irish Government did not act promptly enough in securing
the release of the Rossport Five".
He goes on to ask what general steps the Irish government are taking
to prevent a repetition.

Mr. Bertie Ahern
Dear Mr. Bertie Ahern
I am writing to you as the Convenor of the Cornish Branch of the Celtic
League, in order to express our concerns over the imprisonment of
the landowners, otherwise known as the Rossport Five, who opposed
the Shell Oil company recently. We have reservations that the Irish
Government did not act promptly enough in securing the release of
the Rossport Five.
In addition, we would also like to ask what the Irish Government are
doing to protect the rights of Irish people in rural communities,
especially in the Gaeltacht, against future proposed developments
by multilateral companies, like Shell Oil, that do not have the support
of the residents living within those communities.
The Rossport Five is a case in point and our branch would like assurances
that this sort of action will not happen again.
We look forward to a prompt response.
