Scouters, the Fairfax County Park Authority is running a program March 25-29 at Lee Rec Center that teaches kids with disabilities to ride bikes, and they need some Scouts to work with the kids and provide program support. The program, called “iCan Shine,” uses specially designed bikes that help children with disabilities conquer two-wheelers and ride without fear.
There are two roles that they need seven or more Scouts (Boy Scouts, Crews, Teams, Venturers) to fill:
· Spotters, who run alongside a child as the child is on a special bike, and provide physical and emotional support.
· Administrative assistants to help with check-in and other necessary program functions.
FCPA would like the Scouts to make an orientation session on March 24 and sign up for one or more 90 minute time slot, and preferably be there every day March 25-29 for that slot, or as a group to be there one day. The POC will be at Roundtable on March 13 during the midway from 7:00 until 7:45 to answer questions and talk with leaders.
Please contact the POC (LeeAnn) directly to discuss the program and sign up. Let me suggest that a unit leader should make this contact and then follow up to remind and ensure that the Scouts who sign up actually show up. The POC is:
Adapted Aquatics Coordinator
I’m confident you recognize the value this program represents, both for the Scouts who participate and our community, and what a great opportunity it is to be of service.
