NO. 4 STANFORD DOWNS PACIFIC
STANFORD, Calif. – Brad Lawson had a season-high 23 kills to help No. 4 Stanford outlast No. 15 Pacific in Mountain Pacific Sports Federation men’s volleyball action Wednesday at Burnham Pavilion.
Lawson hit .929 with 13 kills in 14 attacks to lead the Cardinal (6-2 overall, 5-2 MPSF) to victories in the first two sets, and Stanford seemed to have a sweep in hand in the third. But Pacific (4-5, 1-4) rallied from a 22-19 deficit in the third by scoring six consecutive points to grab a set back.
The fourth set was a fight, this time with Stanford down 18-16. But the Cardinal went on a 7-2 run and won it on Brian Cook’s finish off a nifty back set by Evan Barry. Cook, the freshman from Santa Cruz, matched teammate Spencer McLachlin with 11 kills, but also hit .487, with five blocks and four digs.
Barry had 50 assists, a Stanford season best for a four-set match, and All-America libero Erik Shoji had 12 digs.
Stanford embarks on a morning flight to weather-beaten Chicago Thursday morning for matches Friday and Saturday at Lewis and Loyola, respectively.
