Dear Friends and Colleagues,
My latest politics post is a product my alarm at how the Obama Administration in combination with the Republican leadership in the House and Senate seem to be sacrificing social programs on a false pretext, i.e. raising the debt ceiling. The instrument of government may be lamed for years to come via compromises struck in the week to come.
This post is an effort to find "another term" in the discussion that might interest people who are not policy wonks or already acutely aware of the mounting attacks on social programs. In this case I write about these programs as vital supports for the "American Tapestry" a metaphor for the social cohesion of American society. Social cohesion is often left out of discussions of "American values", even though we depend on social cohesion to actually function in society and enjoy life with others.
The sections of the post are as follows:
- Summary of Standoff as of 7/23/2011
- Ripping Apart the American Tapestry
- Political Economy and Social Cohesion
- Liquidationism and Millenarianism of the Right
- Repairing and Reinforcing the American Tapestry: Good Intentions are Not Enough
I hope you find this worthwhile. Comments and thoughts please!!
Towards better times,
