As the representative of the BSW to the WAS Board, I am very happy to inform you that Dan Nicolson will
receive the Award for Distinguished Career in Science by the
Washington Academy of Sciences during the annual banquet of the Academy, to be held on May 6 at Meadowlark Botanical Gardens. Stan Shetler
nominated him and Alain Touwaide endorsed the nomination. For your information, Stan and
Alain themselves were awarded for their scientific contribution by the Academy,
in 2002 and 2003, respectively.
About the Award to be presented to Dan, I quote from the
He is best known worldwide for his expertise in the
arcane subject of botanical nomenclature, the science of naming plants, which is
governed by the intricate and complex rules set forth in the International Code
of Botanical Nomenclature. Serving in effect as a botanical lawyer he interprets
the rules and often adjudicates disputes for colleagues, authoritatively
rendering nomenclatural opinions that others follow. For more than 50 years he
has participated in the work of the International Association for Plant Taxonomy
(IAPT), the governing body for nomenclature, and has held virtually every
position in that organization, including Co-Editor of the Code and President.
This lifetime achievement comes with the one Dan
recently received at Harvard University, where he has just been recognized as Botanist of the Year, 2008.
Members of the Society who would like to celebrate
him on this special occasion can register for the banquet at: http://www.washacadsci.org
to say, it would be just great if colleagues
and friends would come to congratulate him and enjoy with him and the other scientists who will be awarded in different
disciplines this exciting event!
Thanks and best wishes, and I look forward very much to seeing you at Meadowlark on May 6th,
WAS Banquet Committee
