As (to my knowledge) the only one out there building Dakota, I must say that
I am very surprised to hear that Suzanne has suggested it as a "speed play".
Dakota is 38' X 8' and is a HEAVY (over 3 tons loaded) boat. Although it has
shallow draft, I would say it would perform more like a displacement boat.
The recommended power is the Yamaha 50T which has a geared down lower unit
and turns a large diameter prop. It has considerable rocker fore and aft, so
attempting to hang enough power on it to plane would surely make it squat
and wallow. This boat is basically an easily driven (at displacement speed)
Of the Bolger box boats I'm familiar with, I would choose the Fast
Motorsailer (minus the sail, mast, leeboards, and rudders) as a trailable
cruiser that could handle water skiers, tubing, etc.
