Chicago, (aka "Big Shoulders") has deep roots with bluegrass. In the early 1900's, workers out of the deep south flooded to our industrialized north for jobs, romance and hard times. The big city streets were mean and unforgiving. Taunted by a longing for home, the old-time country and blues suddenly had a new poetic force. Since the founding of the WLS National Barn Dance in 1924, Chicago has been a key in the lyrical development of American roots music. Today, the mean streets of "Big Shoulders" has given rise to a gritty backstreet sound in local bluegrass, alt-country, and old-time music. We are a creative and proud musical community.
Brought to you by Chipper Covington and friends. Dedicated to the late great Bill Monroe, Muddy Waters, and kin.
