I have a great appreciation for the outdoors and get out at every opportunity. I am a three-season backpacker and year round hiker. Currently, my trips are
two to three days long as well as an annual week long trip. I utilize the abundant trail shelters in my locale and pack a backup tarp-tent. I like to cover big distances while still taking in the views. I have lightweight leanings but function and reliability are the priority. I mostly travel woodland mountain terrain but enjoy hiking beautiful trails anywhere.
Spike early winter season ice covered trails and re-spike the late seasons hard packed trails. The rain to ice or thaw and freeze cycle of
early winter can make for some fancy trekking pole maneuvers. In New Hampshire we are getting our first rain/ice/snow mix last night.
I have never used traction devices other than snowshoes. Any terrain, any condition is a big claim. Will Microspikes provide slip-free hiking and minimize the search for secure footing? I question the durability of the metal chain and rubber attachment point. How easy the Microspikes are to get on and off wearing gloves? Will the chains ice up or clump with snow? I am very interested in what Microspikes can add to my winter hiking
Last winter I starting contemplating winter camping. Maybe an overnight a few short miles from home this season? This test will be the push I need! If selected I will get at least one backpacking overnight in during the testing period.
