Intervention by people’s movement in assembly elections of Maharashtra
Lok Sangharsh Morcha decided to contest Akkalkuwan assembly seat as a partner of third Front (Republican, Left and Democratic Front)
Maharastra assembly elections was declared and decided to be held on 13 October, 2009. Opposing Cong-NCP and BJP-ShivSena alliance, a third front was emerged in the electoral polity of Maharastra after joining hands by Republicans, Left parties, Mass organizations and Democratic parties. Lok Sangharsh Morcha, a people’s movement fighting against the policies of neo-liberalism and for the tribal rights is also a constituent of this front despite having some reservations on major policy issues with some of its constituent parties. Looking at the larger interest of people’s movement and to strengthen the democratic process of parliamentary politics, Lok Sangharsh Morcha has decided to go ahead with the third front.
As you know friends, Maharstra has unleashed the corporate led development under its Cong-NCP rule and it is one among those few states who rushed for acquiring the huge cultivated lands of farmers for building number of SEZs. Farmers of Vidarbha and North Maharastra region are continuously committing suicide due to anti-farmer policies while tribal people are forced to live under poverty, unemployment and malnutrition in the most of the areas. NRGEA, PDS and other schemes was built for poor are in the mess and have been victim of corrupt practices of politicians and bureaucracy. Thousands of tribals displaced from their villages and livelihood due to mega projects and dams are still waiting for justiciable rehabilitation. “ Forest rights act, 2006” was unimplemented by Maharastra Govt. yet despite after three years of its enactment. At the most of the places rules and legal processors of the act are being violated by govt. officials and repression on tribals by forest department is continued.
At the another end, the main oppositional alliance BJP-ShivSena is pushing their communal agenda in all over the state for the polarization of Hindu vote, instead of raising the people’s voices and fighting against anti-people policies of the state. In the recent days, Maharastra has witnessed dozen of communal riots happened in Malegaon, Dhule, Nasik, Jalgaon, Bombay and so many other places along with a network of Hindu terrorism instigated by RSS and Viswa Hindu Parished a family organization of BJP. Loss of dozens of innocent lives and the burning of carors of property and houses were seen during the riots. They tried to communalize whole tribal belt by creating communal frenzy and spreading rumors against minorities. Kolhapur is the now passing through with the communal violences and BJP-ShivSena is trying to get benefit from it. Maharastra state under the Cong-NCP rule was not only failed to protect people’s live and losses but also made so many political compromises with communal forces for the political gain.
In this situation, people of Maharastra need a viable opposition in the parliamentary polity of state so that people’s issues could be raised prominently and politics made democratic and people’s oriented. Lok Sangharsh Morcha is having its strong belief that only people’s movement of oppressed can make some substantial changes in the parliamentary arena.
Lok Sangharsh Morcha has decided to contest Akkalkuwan (District- Nandurbar) assembly seat (80%tribal populated area) and Kathyabhau Vasawa, devoted tribal leader nominated as a candidate. Since 15 years organization is working rigorously in this area and built up a powerful movement of tribals and made people conscious for their rights. It has popular support of minorities and others also.
