African Renaissance - edited by Malegapuru William Makgoba, Prologue
by Thabo Mbeki. African Renaissance Conference published by Mufube
Publishing, Cape Town 1999.
The publication contains 30 essays based on papers and speeches
delivered at the conference in 1997, addressing the Coporate Council
on Africa in Chantilly in the United States of America, Thabo Mbeki
said: `Those who have eyes to see, let them see. The African
renaissance is upon us'.
I've been flayed, slaved, scoffed, jailed,
Eating in chains, bludgeoned before maids;
I've fought in others' armies, been hailed,
Feasted with gods, oh, and sung with birds
Hero, beggar, fool, I've all by turns,
Known dietetic sweetness and mental treason;
Cold heart, hot temper, each in me burns,
Stubborn with power, beauty in all season.
The African Renaissance in Historical Perspective Bernard
In Tunis, on 13 June 1994, President Mandela made his first speech at
an Organisation of African Unity (OAU) summit. What he said in the
opening paragraph is worth citing at some length:
`In the distant days of antiquity, a Roman sentenced an African city
to death. Carthage must be destroyed! Carthage delenda eat! And
Carthage was destroyed.
Today, as we wander among its ruins, only our imagination and
historical records enable us to appreciate its magnificence. Only
our African being makes it possible for us to hear the piteous cries
of the victims of the vengeance of the Roman Empire.
And yet we can say this, that all human civilization rests on
foundations such as the ruins of the African city of Carthage. Its
architectural remains, like the pyramids of Egypt, the sculptures of
the ancient kingdom of Ghana and Mali and Benin, like the temples of
Ethiopia, the Zimbabwe ruins and the rock paintings of the Kgaladi of
the Namib desert; all speak of Africa's contribution to the formation
In the end, Carthage was destroyed. During the long interregnum, the
children of Africa were carted away as slaves. Our lands became the
property of other nations, our resources a source of enrichment of
other peoples and our kings and queens mere servants of foreign
power. In the end, we were held out as the outstanding example of
the beneficiaries of charity, because we became the permanent victims
of famine, of destructive conflicts and of pestilences of the natural
Bernard Makhosezwe Magubane:
`Who can visit the squatter camp that girth every major city in South
Africa or the single man's hostel and not think of the blood and
sweat of African miners who produce Rhode's and Oppenheimer's wealth?
The world gold market and thus, in part, the world's monetary system,
rests on the African miner, for it is they who dig gold, as also the
coal, to provide electricity for the gold mines. They are the unsung
(and poorly paid) heroes of every Anglo-american report, every De
Beers balance sheet; it is the fruit of their labours which has, over
the years, filled the vaults of Fort Knox, bought horses for the
Oppenheimer family, endowed Rhodes scholarships, and provided
Elizabeth Taylor with her jewellery'.
The Pan-Africanist Credo
In his autobiography W.E.B. Du Bois, stated and provided a sample of
his vision of an African renaissance:
`Pan-Africa will seek to preserve its own past history, and write the
present account, erasing from literature the lies and distortions
about black folks which have disgraced the last centuries of European
and American literature; above all, the new Pan-Africa will seek the
education of all its youth on the broadest possible basis without
religious dogma and in all hospitable lands as well as in Africa for
the end of making Africans not simply profitable workers for
industry, nor stool-pigeons for propaganda, but for making them
modern, intelligent, responsible men of vision and character'.
The Spirit of Ubuntu
Ubuntu or humanness implies a basic respect for human nature as a
whole. It is a social ethic, a unifying vision enshrined in the Zulu
maxim `umuntu ngumuntu ngabanye' (one is a person through others).
The individual commonly says: `I am, because we are; and since we
are, therefore I am'
The ideal of ubuntu is the common spiritual ideal by which all people
south of the Sahara give meaning to life and reality. This concept
is described as the spiritual foundation of all African societies.
`The renaissance of our Africanness is not about rediscovering, but
about reiterating who we are and what we as Africans are all about'
I am proud to be African.

Are you implying that he stood forever in the rarified climes of the
