Susan forwarded to me a copy of a reply she had written in response to
an inquiry on how to avoid receiving spam messages that get posted to
this board. I agree with her analysis of the problem: if you have the
messages from this site forwarded to you as emails, then there is no way
to prevent getting the trash along with the treasures. The admins of
Ancient Waterways monitor the board for spam/filth/junk and we are
RUTHLESS in deleting such materials; personally I ban authors on their
first misdeed if it's sufficiently egregious.
But all we can do is delete messages. We can't prevent people (or bots)
from posting them in the first place (unless perhaps we required people
to apply for membership or some other onerous entry procedure). Anyone
in the world can come to a Yahoo board, join the group, and post an
offer for viagrasexcompanionshipinvestmentadviceetc. If you have opted
to have messages automatically sent to your emailbox, they will be there
milliseconds after being posted; we can't prevent that.
My own choice has been to not have any messages forwarded to my personal
email. Instead, I bookmark this club and visit it now and again to read
messages, clean the boards, check new uploads to the files, etc. You
can do the same if you wish by editing your membership preferences.
