Film is dead, long live film. Did anyone go see the side by side STRANGELOVE? I did my own version of a comparison when Greg Motolla's ADVENTURELAND screened in Austin at two different theaters, one on film and the other on a sony 4k DCP projector.
The film was shot on film, with anamorphic lenses and Kodak vision stock - and looked beautiful in both digital and film presentation. I think the difference in capture medium is now more the deciding factor in quality, although the gap seems to be closing.
Film has never looked better. Kodak vision stock has an incredible latitude, or ability to render a range of tones from dark to light with something like 13 stops, or doubling of light value.
