Subject: Re: [YorkCountyFamilies] MARK MANSON; of Kittery, Me
I forgot to mention that Robert L. Taylor has published numerous genealogy books. I own two. Looking at what he has done, I would consider him fairly reliable. He uses a variety of sources for his work. He starts with the clerk's records, adds information obtained through newspapers and cemetery and compiles the data. I have a couple of typos in his books but I've yet to find him connect the wrong father and son.
I'm not sure that I'm going to help you or further confuse you. I have a book entitled Early Families of Limington, Maine by Robert L. Taylor. On Page 208, the book addresses the Mansons. Here is an excerpt:
i. MARK, b. Feb 24, 1772 Kittery, d. Oct. 2, 1845, ae 74 yrs. Farmington. After his marriage he settled in Limerick and in 1828 moved to Farmington.
m. Apr 12, 1792 in Buxton, Catherine Cox, both of Limington, she d. June 25, 1849, ae 74 yrs. Farmington.
His father is as follows:
MANSON, WILLIAM b. Mar. 16, 1750, Kittery, d. Nov. 27, 1819, South Limington. He moved to Gorham after the birth of his first child and lived upon the Stephen Longfellow place about one and one half miles from Saccarappa. In 1788 he came from Gorham and settled on Joy Road, near outlet of Foss Pond. It is said that at first he and his wife moved into a cooper shop, located near a large reck. He was a Revolutionary Soldier.
m. Rachel Ames, she b. July 28, 1750, Kittery, d. Nov. 8, 1838, ae 88 yrs, 4 mos. South Limington.
No Children are listed for Mark Manson in the book.
Sara-Lee---does the book explain if this MARK MANSON had been married more than twice, once to Catherine COX and possibly a second marriage to Patience REMICK? Seeing how I found 2 Mark MANSONs in the Kittery/Limerick areas during the 1800 census', I am wondering if one was a Mark JR. or one was the son of Rachel AMES and WillIAM MANSON, but then who is the other MARK MANSON.
Also---One person emailed me as said that she had copied some information out of the "Portsmouth Race" and "MUNSONS--MANSONS-MONSONS by Richard MONSON in 1910. Could you tell me if there is a Mark Manson who is the son of a Thomas MANSON and Abigail STAPLES? She further quotes that THOMAS was born 15 July 1748 in Kittery, and was the son of Joseph MANSON born about 1709 and Joseph married Mary LEACH. Now Joseph is suppose to be the son of John and Lydia, and of course John MANSON is the son of Robert MANSON and Esther.
She also lists the children of this Mark MANSON:
If this is true, than this Mark's daughter Charlotte, was born 19 July 1809 and married Andrew REMICK in 21 March 1833 Kittery, Me. And had 4 children together. I have that REMICK line. I am of their oldest son's line (Augustus Andrew REMICK, born in Medford, Mass; and settled in Grafton county, NH).
I am just tying to find the MANSON connections in my family. Please check the books you have at your fingertips and see what might match up. Thanks for doing this because I am really at a brick wall with this, esp with such conflicting information. Gail
