The obvious thing to do at all events - in paying homage to that lowest common
denominator - is at the first parade before any battles, read the "Articles of
War". By that I mean the rules for the event (and of course reading the actual
Articles on a regular basis to the troops was historic anyway). At this parade
ALL participants are required to attend - that goes for
civilian/female/children participants as well. Unit commanders are told to
repeat the rules to any new comers. And another "best possible world" is for
the event organizers to print out and mail to all units and/or individuals
they have registered these very rules. At the event, have another stack of the
rules and hand it out AGAIN to everyone.
We do this in the 93rd for all of our own events and at New Orleans every year
for all Brit portrayals.
My old west act - The Gunfighters - also does this every year for the Texas
Old West Show Competition which we host. The rules are sent out to each
contact person which include the requirement of that person copying and
distributing the rules to each member of their group. The rules are also
posted at the event. Before the competition begins, all participants are
gathered and the rules read out loud. I also ask for a show of hands of
everyone who has received a copy of the rules - invariably there are many who
haven't and I then publicly and right royally in general terms
humiliate/ream/and belittle group leaders for not following the simplest of
requirements of participation (and no - no one yet has been "huffed" enough to
walk out. If any ever did I would personally and gladly help them to the door
and make sure it hit 'em in the ass on the way out! When it comes to safety
there is no such thing as diplomacy as far as I am concerned.)
So this is something to be taken up with event organizers as well, since they
send out invitations, schedules, etc., we need them to include the "Articles"
as well. This naturally means we have to do a bit of work and get to them our
lists of basic rules.
And that's my 2 cents again!
