This is terrific news. There has now been Provincial funding for planning and construction at several sitees; Federal money for expansion of the Lundy's Lane Museum, Ermatinger House, Fort York, etc. I am sure that both levels of Government will continue to support War of 1812 infrastructure (legacy) projects and special events when the time comes.
What is critical at this point is to let our political reps at the Provincial and Federal levels know that their constituents applaud these commitments and support anything that the government can do to ensure that that the bicentennial is commemorated in a meaningful, effective manner--not only with special events but with excellent facilities in place after the last port-a-privy is hauled away. Whining about lack of funding or investment decisions will simply get backs up but voicing appreciation may open the purse strings wider.
The bicentennial is an opportunity to revitalize heritage tourism related to the places where significant War of 1812 events unfolded. This will not only respect these special places but boost awareness and ultimately lead to increased visits to these places. This translates into sustainable operations at these sites and more jobs in the field of heritage protection and presentation.
Let your representative know that you appreciate what has been committed and that you look forward to further investments in our heritage.
