As for the ships on the Great Lakes, the only documented period color
illustration I know of is one done by Lt. Irvine (I think that's the name, Peter
Rindlesbacker can you more info on the fellow.) who served on HMS Detroit at the
Battle of Lake Erie. Not long after the battle he did a watercolor showing
several of the ships at anchor in Put-in-Bay.
I believe this painting is in the possession of the ROM though not
currently on display. It shows Detroit (dismasted) & Lawrence (heavily damaged)
broadside on in the foreground. Detroit has a broad ocher band over the
gunports with a second very narrow ocher band just below. Lawrence has only a very
narrow white stripe just below the level of the gunports.
