Subject: Proposed regional trail riding adventure
July 1, 2008
Dear Trail Riding Friends,
Our Spring trip out West to New Mexico, Arizona and Colorado was spectacular
(See pictures in subsequent email). As a result we are looking forward to
another trip. Unfortunately, we had to cancel the Fall trip out West,
because of the increasingly high fuel prices and the resulting hesitance on
the part of those who had previously planned to make the trip.
Along these lines, it occurred to us that a shorter, regional trip may be in
order. We are therefore proposing a trip to the Great Smoky Mountain
National Park on the North Carolina / Tennessee border, Big South Fork
National River & Recreation Area in Tennessee and Mt. Rogers National
Recreation Area in Virginia. (It should be cooler during this period at
these locations because of the elevation.) The proposed trip is for 14 days,
August 26 through September 8. The trip itinerary is as follows:
1. Assemble at Lakeview, camp and ride, Tuesday, August 26th.
2. Depart Lakeview to the Great Smoky Mountain National Park (305
miles, 6.0 hours) on Wednesday, August 27th.
3. Camp & ride in the Great Smoky Mountain National Park for Three
nights / two days (Thursday & Friday).
4. Depart the Great Smoky Mountain National Park for Big South Fork
National River & Recreation Area (180 miles, 3.5 hours) on Saturday, August
5. Camp & ride at Big South Fork for four nights / three days (Sunday,
6. Depart Big South Fork for Mt. Rogers (275 miles, 5.5 hours) on
Wednesday, September 3rd.
7. Camp & ride at Mt. Rogers for four nights / three days (Thursday,
8. Return to Lakeview on Sunday, September 7th (325 miles, 6.5 hours).
9. Return home Monday, September 8th.
The fee includes our assistance in navigating from Lakeview Plantation to
these locations and back to Lakeview, in camp and on the trail. It also
includes all camping and stalls, including two nights stay at Lakeview, in
order to allow folks to assemble here the day before departure and lay over
before returning home. (If desirable, you may meet us in the Great Smokey
Mountain National Park, at Big South Fork or at Mt. Rogers with an
appropriate discount applicable.) The fee is $795.00 per rig with one horse
and rider plus $80 per each additional horse & rider. This works out to less
than $57.00 per day for a person traveling alone or $62.50 per day for a
party of two ($31.25 per person per day). The fee also includes: Water,
electricity, a corral panel stall and access to the shower house at
Lakeview. Water, electricity, a covered stall and access to the shower house
at Big South Fork and Mt. Rogers. And water, a nice tie stall and access to
a flush toilet in the Smoky Mountain National Park campground. (Electricity
and showers are not available at the Smoky Mountain National Park
Please let us know at your earliest convenience, if this appeals to you, as
space is limited.
