New Horse Trailer Parking Lot Opens at
Petersburg National Battlefield
As of December 1, 2001 Petersburg National Battlefield will have a new parking
area for horse trailers. The new site is located behind the park's headquarters
building at 1539 Hickory Hill Road in Petersburg.
Horse riders will notice that the new lot is a great improvement over the
previous site which was located on Mahone Avenue in Fort Lee, just one mile
north of the new parking area. Parking will be on grass, and shade trees will
keep the horses and owners cooler in the summer months. A large turning circle
allows for easy access in and out of the parking area. Visitors are requested,
however, to not tie their horses to the trees for risk of tree damage.
The parking lot is conveniently located close to both Routes 95 and 295.
Visitors will need to take the Rt. 460 East exit off of 95 and the Rt. 460 West
exit off of 295. Once on Rt. 460 turn at stop light by Hardees Restaurant onto
Hickory Hill Road. Follow Hickory Hill Road for only ¼ mile and turn left at
Park Headquarters (1539 Hickory Hill Road). Follow signs to the parking area. To
exit, proceed by the Ranger Station. For more information, please contact
Volunteer Coordinator, Larry Newark at (804) 862-4017 or larry_newark@....

The new PNB trailer parking is wonderful! The parking spot is easy to find
and easy to get in and out of. We didn't have to compete for parking spaces
with any runners or bikers. I think everyone using the park will be pleased
with this new arrangement. Another benefit is there will be plenty of shade
this summer, which will be great! The bridle path into the park is easy to
find and well marked.
Larry Newark, the other park personnel, and all the volunteers did a
wonderful job. The parking is even better than ever!
