I got this email from Maritza Rodriguez and wanted to pass it along. It sounds
like a really great opportunity if you're interested in getting some hands-on
experience in this area. Pass it along to anyone who would be interested. You
can email her for more information at maritza@...
Dear AI members,
I would like to invite you to apply to participate in the Refugee
Program's next training in refugee and asylum law and policy, to be
followed by a visit to a detention center. We will offer the next
one in El Paso on August 6, 7 and 8, and will accept 6-8 applicants
for the training.
The training will begin on Saturday, August 6, and will continue
throughout the day on Sunday. You will learn about the international
refugee protection system and about the United States' own refugee
and asylum policy in a series of concise, candid talks followed by
plenty of time for questions and answers. To participate in this
training, you need not have any background in refugee or asylum law.
We will give strong preference, however, to members who live in the
Southern region. We will conduct similar trainings in other regions
as soon as possible - money and time permitting.
We will include the following topics:
- how refugee and asylum policy has changed since September
- specific refugee issues and cases of current concern to AI
- detention of asylum-seekers in the United States
On Monday we will visit El Paso Service Processing Center - a
detention center run by the Department of Homeland Security.
Training participants will interview immigration detainees seeking
relief from deportation back to their home countries - and seeking
help from AIUSA's Refugee Program.
Participants must be able to take the day off on Monday, August 8.
Costs: We can pay your travel expenses to El Paso and all other
costs except lodging. If that is a hardship for you, we can arrange
for you to stay with an AI member.
Commitment: If you take part in this training, we expect you to be
willing to conduct two or three interviews at detention centers near
your home, in the course of the next year.
Application: please send us a one-page statement on why you would
like to participate in the training, along with your resume, to
