He was born July 13, 1913, in Shiner, to the late Jim L. and Mary Terese Kokas Mikes. He was a 1934 graduate of Shiner Catholic High School. He attended Southwest Texas State University in San Marcos. He was a second lieutenant in the U.S. Army Air Corps, serving in World War II. He received the American Defense, Air Offensive Europe, Normandy, Northern France, Ardennes, Rhineland, Central Europe and Victory medals. He was a member and chairman of the Catholic Charities Commission of the Diocese of Fort Worth. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Retired Officers Association of the U.S. He was past chairman of the Volunteer Services Council of Denton State School and a board member of the Texas State Volunteer Services Council, representing North Texas.
Survivors: sister, Mildred Franta of Hallettsville; and brother, Alphonse J. Mikes of Shiner.
Preceded in death by: wife, Fredreka Mikes; daughter, Helen Elizabeth Mikes; and sister, Leona Mikes Dusek.
Services will be 10 a.m. today at St. Patrick Cathedral.
Graveside services will be 11:15 a.m. Thursday at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery in San Antonio. Thompson's Harveson & Cole Funeral Home, Fort Worth, 817-336-0345.
