Volunteers are needed to operate a new visitor information center at Antietam National Battlefield. The Newcomer House will open to the public on September 14, 2010 in partnership with the Hagerstown/Washington County Convention and Visitors Bureau, Heart of the Civil War Heritage Area, National Museum of Civil War Medicine, and South Mountain State Battlefield.
The Newcomer House will serve as an information center for visitors travelling to the area. The focus area encompasses Carroll, Frederick and Washington Counties, South Mountain State Battlefield, Antietam National Battlefield, the Pry House Field Hospital Museum, and other federal, state, and local parks. The Newcomer House is located on Maryland Route 34 east of Sharpsburg, Maryland.
No specific knowledge or skills are required, but a willingness to deal with the public in a cordial manner is important. The volunteer’s primary duty will be to greet visitors as they enter the Newcomer House, orient them, and provide information. Training and uniforms will be provided.
