Olympia, WA, the historic origin of the Riot Grrrl movement spawned a
phenomenon in the year 2000 when it became the birthplace of
A music festival that showcased and encouraged the artistic,
organizational, and political talents of women that went on to
ladies of like minds in over 87 other cities; such as Dublin,
Monterrey, Mexico, Sao Paulo, San Francisco, New York, and Austin; to
come together and create their own versions of Ladyfest.
Ladyfest Olympia 2005 is the homecoming of this incredible movement
organized by local women of all identities to showcase, celebrate and
encourage the art and activism of women everywhere. Taking place July
28-31 at the historic Capitol Theater, performers include Wanda
Jackson, The Gossip, Kimya Dawson, Mary Timony, Barbara Lynn and Tara
Jane O'Neil. All proceeds will benefit local non-profit organizations
that support women.
Ladyfest has flourished worldwide, because every corner of the world
has smart and talented women who are driven to utilize their
individual and combined skills to enlighten the world, their
communities and each other. The women involved come to the festival
with every talent imaginable. Organizers and performers range from
musicians, performance artists, businesswomen, activists, writers,
everything in between.
Ladyfest Olympia is not only about music; it will also include
to educate women on current issues. Panels and workshops at Ladyfest
2000 included topics such as fat oppression, how welfare reforms
affect women, and the history of domestic violence activism, and this
year the topics will be just as relevant and eye opening.
