An astronomer and deputy leader of astronomy for the federal National Science Foundation has been named the new director of Lowell Observatory, to begin in June.
Eileen Friel was appointed by Lowell trustee Bill Putnam to become the observatory's 10th director. She replaces longtime director Bob Millis, who is stepping down June 15 after being director at Lowell since 1989. Friel will be the first woman to lead the observatory, which was founded in 1894.
