Aaahhhh . . . . A fellow Realist!!! -- LOL
We can add some of my own = the basic ability of a single airchamber allowing multidirectional maneuverability. The sheer NOISE of these things giving the enemy far warning of their approach and even allowing targeting from miles away. The fact that an unanchored floating platform would not make for a stable heavy weapons platform being subject to ALL of the weapon's recoil. Not to mention the pilot constantly forced to fight every cross-draft, tail and head wind that came his way. And, I'm sorry, but just forcing more air /power into the forward fans would never allow these monsters to climb anything that tracks or wheels wouldn't think twice about. Ones the skirt breaks contact with the ground its all over. And don't even get me started on those Gun-cars. We can even nitpick his basic Tactical applications in most every case.

One thing that I've been forced to learn over the years, especially with writers like David Drake, is to NOT think of them as being SCIENCE fiction, but something more akin to FANTASY. Hence my own tag = Tekno Fantasy. Drake being just one of those many who really doesn't put much thought or research behind the Science side of his story telling. And in many cases I can't blame most of these writers today due to our EVER EVOLVING "Scientific" wisdom. That which was carved in stone yesterday is now only so much dated muck today. Am I right? So I just keep telling myself, "JUST SHUT UP and ENJOY THE RIDE!!!" And THAT is one of the things, IMO, that raises Drake above a whole lot of the rest of those Tek-F writers. Ya got to admit, he does spin some DARN GOOD yarns!!!
I often ask myself, = Why is it that if a writer spins a story about ~ Dragons ~ we have little trouble accepting the Nature-of-the-Beast, but if technology gets thrown in we always feel a need (craving???) to pick it apart???
Keep It FUN!
