Ernakulam District Court ordered the handing over of administration of the Koothattukulam St. Johns Jacobite Syrian Church, to the democratically elected members. The District Judge Sadanandan issued the order, after rejecting the petition filed against the election by the orthodox faction member K. P. Abraham.
The church administration was under receivership since 1984, after a court case filed in the District Court in 1981. Previous election in the Church was in 1979 and the District Court ordered on 24th January 2004 for a fresh election. On April 4th 2004, election was conducted by secret ballot. The elected two Trustees, Secretary, School Manager and fifteen Managing Committee members, who secured more than 80 percent vote, were from the Patriarchal faction.
The orthodox faction filed a petition against the election on June 29th at the Kerala High Court. As per its verdict, the District Court conducted a re-hearing of the case and rejected the petition with fine to the orthodox faction for the court expenses. However, the orthodox faction again went to High Court for stay order, which was duly rejected by the High Court on 2nd December 2004, ultimately paved way for the transfer of administration to the newly elected committee.
