The Holy Trinity Cathedral was built to commemorate Ethiopia’s liberation from Italian occupation. It is considered to be the second most important place of worship in Ethiopia, after the Church of Our Lady Mary of Zion in Axum.
The late Patriarch Abune Tekle Haimanot has been buried in churchyard.
The Cathedral also hold the tombs of His Imperial Majesty Emperor Haile Selassie I and Her Imperial Majesty Empress Menen Asfaw, and other members of the Imperial Family. It is also the final resting place of the British suffragette and anti-fascist activist Sylvia Pankhurst.
