KOCHI AUG. 26. The Patriarch faction head, Catholicos Baselios Thomas
I, has termed as ``immature'' and ``senile'' the reported remark of
the Orthodox faction head that he would consider entering politics.
The Catholicos told a news conference here today that faith and
politics were two different concepts and church leaders should view
the church and the State as two separate entities.
He said that it was not proper to ``wield the sword'' against the
Government. The Orthodox faction head, Baselius Marthoma Mathews II,
had unleashed an attack on the UDF Government at a public meeting at
Thiruvalla on Sunday.
The Catholicos said the rival faction was attempting to mislead the
Government and the courts and was trying to bring pressure on the UDF
The Patriarch chief said his faction would resist any attempt by the
Orthodox faction to enter the St. Mary's Church, Manarcadu. The
Catholicos, Beselius Marthoma Mathews II, has announced that he would
take out a huge rally on August 30 to the Manarcadu church.
The church was ``fully owned'' by the Patriarch faction and its
functionaries had never sent out an invitation to the rival
Catholicos to visit the church, the Patriarch faction chief claimed.
They had also resolved not to receive the rival Catholicos onto the
church premises. He alleged that the move for the march by the
Orthodox faction was with an ``evil intention'' to seize the church.
