Rebuilding Lower Manhattan
The California Perspective
Wednesday, December 4:
7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.
Graduate School of Journalism
121 North Gate Hall
(Euclid and Hearst)
Last October, the UC Berkeley School of Journalism hosted a public forum on rebuilding Lower Manhattan. This is a follow-up to that controversial debate on how the recovery is taking shape and how Californians view the process. What should a memorial look like and why? Are the economic pressures at odds with goals of a memorial? Who should the rebuilding serve: families of the victim, the design of the skyline, the neighborhood, the city of New York, the event or the moment in history? What progress has been made? New York-based Stephan Van Dam will show an animated film on the role public transportation plays in getting lower Manhattan out of its current crisis. The film helped FEMA change the rules and allow the $4.5 billion in reconstruction funds, now be used for new construction such as Fulton Central, a new downtown hub.
Sponsored by the Berkeley Graduate School of Journalism, College of Environmental Design, the Program on Housing and Urban Policy and BRIDGE Housing Corporation. Faculty, professionals, students, and community members are invited to attend. For more information, call Brad Inman at 510-290-9447 or email Brad@....
