Bicycle/Pedestrian Projects Intern
Public Works Agency
Transportation Services Division
The City of Oakland seeks qualified individuals for the position of
Bicycle/Pedestrian Engineering Intern. The incumbent performs a variety of
administrative and technical tasks, as well as field work, under supervision
of the Bicycle and Pedestrian Program Manager, but may accept assignments
from other staff. The position is part-time (20 hours a week) with a
starting pay of $16.62 per hour.
Typical duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:
Assists with producing maps and statistical data, taking photographs and
developing other information as needed for grant applications for pedestrian
and bicycle projects; assists with submission of reimbursement requests and
project updates, both internally and to funding agencies
Collects pedestrian and bicycle data on local streets; researches automobile
level of service and collision data; under direction, produces reports from
collected data in support of City projects
Compiles plan review comments, assists with development of bicycle signage
system, and provides other engineering support as needed
Maintains database of bicycle parking racks, including maintenance issues;
assists with development of bicycle parking directories for Oakland
commercial districts. Assists with maintaining other databases
Provides back-up support for organizing and hosting Oakland's annual Bike to
Work Day and other events; garners support from volunteers and businesses;
assists with site arrangements
Notifies the public and staff of community meetings
Performs related clerical and administrative duties as assigned
Walks, bicycles or drives a vehicle to various City locations to perform
fieldwork, as needed
Demonstrated experience working in an office environment
College course work in Traffic Engineering; emphasis on multi-modal
facilities and transportation planning, helpful but not required.
Demonstrated knowledge of word processing, database management and Internet.
Basic communication and organizational skills transportation
Driver's License: Due to the nature of the assignment, public transportation
and bicycling may be cost-effective and efficient methods for traveling to
the various locations required. Individuals who are appointed to this
position will be required to maintain a valid California Drivers license
throughout the tenure of employment or demonstrate the ability to travel to
various locations in a timely manner as required in the performance of
