This field course examines contemporary issues of housing and community
development in Spain, with a focus on Barcelona and Catalonia. Through
lectures, field trips, and hands-on work experiences, participants will
learn about Spanish approaches to housing and neighborhood improvement;
integration of internal migrants like Gypsies and immigrants from North
Africa, Latin America, and Eastern Europe; the political, ideological,
and cultural factors that inform policy; and the role of the state and
community organizations in planning and development. There will be
ample time for tapas, sangria, dancing, and enjoying the rich cultural
and historical sites.
