We would like to submit a proposal to organise a workshop at the Fondation Brocher (near Geneva, Switzerland), which will, if funding is provided, take place in 2014 and address the following question:
‘Meat’ from stem cells and from animals with ‘enhanced’ properties, healthy alternatives?
2. General aims
The workshop will aim to address the following questions:
1. What are the ethical issues associated with the potential creation of ‘cultured meat’ and flesh from animals with ‘enhanced’ properties, including reduced capacities for sentience and increased nutritional benefits?
2. How do we assess the costs and benefits of these proposed technological developments - compared with conventional animal products - in the context of uncertain early stage technologies?
3. Are there any alternatives that could be developed to provide the benefits that may be associated with these scientific goals, and if so, might these be preferable?
For a number of reasons, the consumption of animal products has received increasing bioethical scrutiny in recent years, including rising levels of obesity, environmental degradation, climate change, zoonotic disease, and moral concerns with the treatment of animals. A novel technology that is being developed, partly to address some of these concerns, is the growing of ‘synthetic or cultured meat’ which relies on the isolation of animals’ stem cells and their stimulation into growth in laboratories. Some scientists have even announced that the world’s first ‘in vitro beef burger’ will be consumed later this year. Some animals have also been created with reduced capacities to experience pain, including blind chickens, and proposals have been made to use conventional breeding and genetic modification technologies to create other animals with reduced capacities for sentience, as well as animals who possess particular benefits, for example reduced levels of saturated fats, that could be beneficial for the human beings who consume them. What the creation of animals with reduced sentience and the production of lab-grown ‘meat’ have in common is that they respond to a range of animal welfare concerns associated with the consumption of animal products. The prima facie benefit of blind chickens, for example, is that they are less prone to aggressive behaviour, resulting in a reduction of pecking injuries, and the prima facie benefit of ‘synthetic meat’ is that ‘it’ is not alive and, therefore, insentient. However, some concerns have been expressed in relation to these developments, including concerns with human and animal ‘dignity’, as well as with the alleged ‘unnaturalness’ of these developments. These feelings are less easily understood within conventional bioethical frameworks that focus predominantly on animal welfare.
This workshop aims to bring together a number of experts working at the forefront of the social, ethical, and legal dimensions of these new developments to explore their potential benefits and concerns.
Please note that this workshop is restricted to a maximum of 12 speakers, 6 of which must reside within the European Union. If you are interested in presenting at this workshop, please send us a Word document in an attachment that is no longer than 2 pages, including at least the following details:

3/ the title of your anticipated contribution to the workshop and a short abstract of no more than 200 words for a presentation that would take no longer than 30 mins to present
4/ a very concise CV, including a few sentences that describe your motivation for participation, and whether you would be willing to chair the discussion of a paper presented by someone else.
5/ Please also state your preferred time for this workshop, which is anticipated to last 3 days, and any dates when you will not be available between 6 May-28 June 2014 or between 4 November 2014-31 January 2015.
All documents will be deleted after selection, except those belonging to invited contributors, whose documents will be deleted after the proposed workshop has taken place. Applicants will notify those who respond to this call within two weeks after submission.

Are you a scholar in animal ethics and law, based in a European Science Foundation (ESF) member organisation country (for details, see: http://www.esf.org/?id=7644)? If so, then this might be for you.
We are looking for 15 to 30 scholars with an interest in presenting a paper at a workshop to be held in May or June 2014, which will be organised if funding is provided by the European Science Foundation.
The topic is:
European Union law, the consumption of animal products, and the quest for a sustainable food system
In what follows we provide further details in relation to this opportunity.
The topic of this proposed workshop is the ethics and law associated with the consumption of animal products. The workshop will be exploratory, given the wide range of views that exist on the question of whether or not, and if so when, human beings should consume such products. Traditionally, ethicists and legal scholars who have questioned the consumption of animal products, or of particular animal products, have focused predominantly on questions related to animal welfare and animal rights, for example the question of whether or not human beings ought to avoid eating horses. Though the consumption of animal products has traditionally been justified by appeal to the human health benefits that they may provide, in more recent times a small number of scholars have started to question their health impact. This increased scrutiny has emerged in relation to food security, obesity, and zoonoses, as well as in conjunction with growing concerns about environmental degradation and climate change. The fact that a European legal context for such consumption exists, in the shape of European Union (EU) law, raises the question of whether scholars who work in the field of animal ethics and law should endorse EU law on the use of animals for food, particularly at a time when the adequacy of the existing legal framework has also come under scrutiny because of concerns about its compatibility with EU Directive 2010/63/EU which regulates the use of animals for scientific purposes.
