If you don't want to go all the way to Berkeley Bowl, try your first young Mexican coconuts, here's the place.
I posted before about this place. There might ONE OTHER be another Mexican produce market that sells these, but it's rare...
The coconuts are small but very fresh. The outside is so fresh that it is very moist. In a few days the outside will be moldy if not aired out properly.
I had one 3 years ago and it's not as sweet as Thai coconuts. But it's more substainable since you don't have to ship it several million miles to the store.
Unless you are buying a case, no need to shop around for pricing on these coconuts. Prices are always high for them.
I didn't buy any for my own consumption cause I'll spend my frugal money on organic local pluots this week.
I spoke with the guy who's the owner. He said most people don't stock these coconuts cause they are not only expensive but it gets rancid quickly.
Today the store-Casa Thai also have organic iceberg lettuce for 50cents. Most stores once in a while get overstock organic produce for l/2 the price.....
Yea, I know, we avoid Iceberg Lettuce like the plague...
SPeaking of iceberg... Salinas is the capital of ICeberg lettuce, they grow the largest amount of lettuce in that region cause there's tons of underground FRESH water for farming. Unfortunately, over farming and over using the water, there's less and less fresh water.... Now salty ocean water is coming/creeping into the ground water.
Some of the community people dont' care, they just want to make as much money NOW and worry about the water later...
If you are rich you can look hard for fresh spring water, underground well water.
THere's tons of land with hot springs for sale.... but you have to put a lot of money to upgrade the place..
regular Chinese Restaurant on Valencia closed due to high rents
