For underarm gussets, I use a standard 6" square of fabric. This is pretty
big, but I use tunics for working clothes, so I like to have plenty of
room. Also, I layer tunics, so again, need a bit of wiggle room.
If your intersted, I have a handout available on my website called "Getting

As far as pattern, that's up to you. Is that what you mean by checker
pattern, or are you talking about making what is called a parti-coloured
tunic, where the front/back panel of your tunic is made up of four pieces
of fabric of different colours?
If you have any other questions, please feel free to ask.
