If you want to use it to actually sew with (not just couched into place using another thread), I suggest getting a good quality passing thread or Benton & Johnson wire. There are various choices from real silver to faux silver threads, and you may want to try a few different types & sizes to see what works best for your needs. And if you sew through fabric with them, use about 18" length, and because they kink, keep the needle near one end which will be cut off.
Do not use Japanese threads to embroider into fabric, as those are wrapped and do not like going through the fabric. They are best used for couching on top, and work best when they are wrapped around a koma (Japanese wooden bobbin) and worked with a little bit of tension.
There are various online sources which you can find with a google search. If you are on Facebook, there is a hand embroidery group that has a variety of embroidery folks, from newbies to experts, and are willing to help answer various hand embroidery questions. There is also a file of suggested suppliers there.
