* PRESIDENT BUSH CONSISTENTLY PRAISES community colleges, but
in the budget that he proposed this week he called for
abolishing or scaling back two federal programs that provide
money to two-year institutions. While the budget includes
some new funds for the institutions, lobbyists say the bottom
line would be a net loss.

* CONGRESS MOVED A STEP CLOSER on Wednesday to expanding a
federal program that supports job training at community
colleges as a subcommittee of the U.S. House of
Representatives approved legislation to renew the Workforce
Investment Act of 1998.
