Larry and Joe,
I must apologize for the awkward way I re-quoted my post of Jan.31st
yesterday. My use of "rumor-mongering" and "snarky" were in reference to
what often pops up on this list when these issues arise (they did back in
January, and I was trying to warn against it now as it appeared
misunderstanding of what the law actually banned was beginning again).
Larry, in particular, I did not mean to imply that you were at all being
snarky. I was trying to warn everyone against it, apparently awkwardly.
You have to admit that your phrasing of your concern, which you emphatically
repeat, leaves people like Sean and I to understand that these various
officials were responding to aspects of the new laws when they forbade the
carrying of various firearms on those occasions you cite. I'm starting to
get the impression that those officials, rightly or wrongly, were responding
to the actual Sandy Hook incident itself (especially if one considers, as
you say, those events were taking place relative geographically to Sandy
Hook), rather than enforcing any aspects of the actual laws that resulted
from it. Those are two distinct things.
I've been in this hobby way too long and have seen the cycle over and over
again how a mistake leads to a rumor and there's an awful lot of people in
this hobby who jump to conclusions and believe the worst, panic, then stop
going to events in certain areas.
Whether officials in any particular area wish to eliminate the carrying of
weapons at ceremonies, parades, or whatever for some social perception they
have is one thing. That may or may not pass in time - it is not law. It also
happens from time to time all over the place (we got a complaint from a
nearby office worker for firing our muskets for a school group "too soon
after Sandy Hook" - hey, the teachers said they wanted it). It's another
thing if people in the hobby broadly perceive that their muskets and the
like are now legally banned throughout the whole site, potentially
compromising many events long in the planning.
