You don't need to. Either use the workflow outlined at
Photomatix, which allows you to create a HDR directly from RAW.
If you use the first approach, you get a 16 bit TIFF which contains
almost all dynamic range from the RAW but will look a bit dull. You
can enhance contrast by using Unsharp mask with a high radius (>= 70
pixel) and low percentage (<= 30%), or you use a tonemapper to reveal
