ALEC at 40: Turning Back the Clock on Prosperity and Progress
The Center for Media and Democracy (CMD) has released a new report: "ALEC at 40: Turning Back the Clock on Prosperity and Progress." The report identifies and analyzes 466 American Legislative Exchange Council bills introduced in 2013.
ALEC Harkens Back to a Bygone Era
The year was 1973. Richard Nixon said he was "not a crook." John Dean said there was "a cancer on the presidency." Pinochet was taking over Chile; George Wallace was still in charge of Alabama. Gasoline was 40 cents a gallon and the minimum wage was $1.60 an hour.
Climate Change Denial with Your Coffee? ALEC & Heartland Dish Up Spin
ALEC lawmakers were told about climate change from the fast-talking Joe Bastardi, who describes himself as a long-range weather forecaster, along with climate change deniers from the notorious Heartland Institute. Bastardi's claim is that the earth is not getting warmer: it is going "to get colder over the next 20 to 30 years."
What's on ALEC's Agenda this Year?
Last week, the corporate and legislators of the American Legislative Exchange Council met at the swank Palmer House hotel in Chicago to celebrate the organization's 40th anniversary, be educated in corporate sponsored workshops, and adopt legislative priorities for the coming year. Here is what was on the agenda for ALEC's 40th -- notably, some of the workshops carried a $40,000 pricetag for corporate sponsors.
CMD and Common Cause Charge ALEC with Tax Fraud for Secretive "Scholarships"
ALEC is running a secretive, multi-million dollar slush fund that finances lavish trips for state legislators and has misled the Internal Revenue Service about the fund's activity, Common Cause and the Center for Media and Democracy have charged. The "scholarship fund" scheme also raises serious questions about ALEC's compliance with state gift and disclosure laws, and the ethics of lawmakers who accept ALEC's travel payments.
Voices Against Hedge Fund Millionaire Larry Summers to Head the Fed
Opposition is growing to the idea of President Obama naming Larry Summers to head the Federal Reserve. As William Greider wrote in The Nation, "Summers is a toxic retread from the old boys' network and a nettlesome egotist who offended just about everyone during his previous tours in government. More to the point, Summers was a central player in the grave governing errors that led to the financial collapse and a ruined economy."
Taxpayer Dollars Subsidize ALEC's Birthday Bash
As ALEC geared up for its 40th birthday party in Chicago, Illinois, last week, some state legislatures were digging into taxpayers' pockets to pay for ALEC politicians to travel to the birthday bash. . .
