Subject: Elita Tom and her "Adorable Old Geezers"
Elita represented Indian Country very well today here in Clarksville, Indiana and immediately won over 200 Lewis and Clark "followers" at the noontime awards luncheon and this evening's final banquet. She described how much it has meant to portray Sacagawea in living history encampments and presentations with all her "adorable old geezer" friends. For the rest of the day today, I heard people and speakers saying they were proud to be counted as "old geezers" if it meant being associated with Elita. A good many wanted their photos made when she wore her buckskins at tonight's final gathering. She admitted to me it was a scary experience making her first plane trip but she's quickly figuring out all these new things just like the original Sacagawea did in unfamliar territory. Thank you all for the parts you played in her knowledge, speaking skills, nomination and award. She named all the organizations whose contributions made the trip possible. I hope Ellie and I can visit Seaside next month and see her in action with the Saltmakers Return. It must be a rare opportunity when a person depicting Sacagawea for a living history situation is the same age as the real person was.
